Course & Programme
How long are the courses?

There are two distances: Ultra of around 52 km with 2,100 m of climb and Challenge of around 24 km with 1,000 m. Both come as Marsch (long-distance hike) and Trail (trail running).

Where are the start and finish?

Start and finish of the Ultra are at the Stift Spital am Pyhrn. The Challenge ends at the Hengstpass, from where an organised shuttle returns to Spital am Pyhrn.

Are there time limits?

Yes. For the Ultra distance, cut-offs apply at Hengstpass (12:00), Singerskogel (17:00) and Hofalm (22:00). Anyone failing to reach these time limits is removed from the official ranking for safety reasons.

How does orientation work?

The course is clearly marked with temporary and permanent signposts. In addition, a GPX file is available for download.

Can I hike the course outside the event?

Yes. The course will be permanently signposted and can be used as a hiking route outside the event.

Food and Drink
Are there aid stations along the course?

Yes. The Ultra distance has several aid stations along the route — including Marktplatz Windischgarsten (km 9), Wurbauerkogel (km 11), Hanslalm (km 21), Hengstpass (km 24), Singerskogl (km 35), Gowilalm (km 38), Hofalm (km 42) and Rohrauerhaus (km 44). The Challenge covers the first four of these.

Offered are drinks, snacks and energy bars; some stations also serve warm and cold food. Run by regional clubs, mountain huts and volunteer helpers.

Safety
Is there medical support along the course?

Yes. Medical staff are available along the course for minor issues such as blisters, abrasions and similar small injuries.

What happens with bigger injuries or emergencies?

For more serious problems, the emergency call is made and the rescue chain activated. If possible, participants should place the emergency call themselves.

Who is responsible during the event?

Despite organisational safety measures, all participants are responsible for their own safety. Realistic assessment of your own performance and responsible behaviour in the terrain are prerequisites.

Travel & Accommodation
How do I get to Windischgarsten?

Windischgarsten is easily reached via the Pyhrn motorway A9 (exit Rossleithen / Windischgarsten) and via the Pyhrn railway line.

Are there partner hotels?

Yes. Several partner hotels and event accommodations offer special packages for participants, from guaranteed starting place quotas to early breakfast and recovery packages for after the event.

Other
Are trekking or trailrunning poles allowed?

Yes. Poles are explicitly allowed. Participants may decide for themselves whether to use them for support.

May I bring my dog?

In principle participation with a dog is possible. The course is very demanding with 50 kilometres and many vertical metres. Special food for four-legged friends is not provided, so we advise against participating with a dog.

It goes without saying: dog waste must also be removed in forest and alpine terrain.

Can I transfer my registration?

Yes, a transfer is possible but must be arranged in advance with the organising team. Please email info@kalkalpenmarsch.at.

Is there a waiting list?

Yes. Once the participant limit has been reached, a waiting list is set up. Released starting places are reassigned in order.

When and where can I pick up my bib?

Bib pickup takes place the day before the event and on the day of the event before the start in the start/finish area in Windischgarsten. Exact times will be announced in good time. For participants staying in partner hotels, bibs are deposited there.

Is there a luggage drop?

Yes. A luggage drop is set up in the start and finish area where personal belongings can be deposited safely.

Are pacing vehicles allowed?

No. Pacing vehicles are not allowed, as most of the course runs over hiking and forest paths. Spectators can still reach and cheer on participants at selected spots.

Are there showers after the event?

Yes. Showers and changing facilities are set up in the start and finish area in Windischgarsten.

Where can I find results and photos?

After the event, results, course photos and impressions are published on the website.
